Light up bulbs by microwaving them.

Grab a glass and fill it half full with water. Place the light bulb, socket-end first, into the glass of water and set the glass in the centre of the microwave.

Close the door of the microwave and set the time to no more than 45 seconds. The bulb will light up!!!!

Before removing both the glass and the light bulb from the microwave, allow them to cool and use a heavy glove to protect your hand.

The light bulb doesn’t explode because the water acts as a shield against the metal of the bulb from the effect of the microwaves.

The microwaves do, however, pass through the glass of the light bulb to excite the tungsten filament inside of it. The tungsten is thin enough that it glows when excited by the microwaves.

Eruption of film canisters

The fizzing you see when you drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet in water is the same sort of fizzing that you see from baking powder. When you drop the tablet in water, the acid and the baking soda react. This produces the fizz.

We are going to use this fizzing to get some film canisters cool eruption!

1. Remove the cap from a film canister and put a teaspoon of water into it. Drop an Alka-Seltzer tablet into the canister and close the canister again with the cap.

2. Quickly put the canister on the ground cap side down and step back.

3. After about 10 seconds, you will hear a ‘pop’ and the film canister will launch into the air!

Are you brave enough to do this with several film canisters at a time?

1. Glue the Alka-Seltzer onto each cap.

2. Glue the caps with the tablets on a tray. Turn the tray upside down.

3. Put a teaspoon of water into each canister.

4. With the tray still upside down place every canister in its cap.

5. Turn the tray to activate all the canisters at the same time and run!

Isn’t it a great eruption of film canisters?

Get everything sticky after a mentos and coke geyser.

Open a bottle of diet coke. Unwrap a whole roll of Mentos and roll a piece of paper into a tube just big enough to hold the loose Mentos.

Drop all of the Mentos into the bottle at the same time and then move out of the way. You will get a beautiful 1m high coke geyser.

Why does mixing Mentos with soda produce this incredible eruption?

When you drop the Mentos into the soda, the dissolving candy breaks the surface tension, so it takes less work to form new bubbles.

Each Mentos candy has thousands of tiny pits all over the surface. These tiny pits are perfect places for carbon dioxide bubbles to form.

The Mentos candies are heavy and sink to the bottom of the bottle so when all this gas is released, it literally pushes all of the liquid up and out of the bottle in an incredible soda blast.
